By leveraging our mobile dataset, the world’s largest, Lookout provided insights on mobile threats for the Verizon Mobile Security Index 2019 report.

According to the Verizon Mobile Security Index 2019 (MSI), mobile risks are rising, and a majority of organizations believe mobile threats are creating risk to their enterprises. As the workplace moves to a bring your own device (BYOD) and post-perimeter environment, endpoints, such as mobile devices, are no longer protected from within a corporate firewall. In fact, mobile devices often have access to all kinds of valuable corporate data stored in the company network and the cloud -- customer lists, company financials, yet often don’t have endpoint protection.

Lookout contributed to Verizon’s Mobile Security Index to help educate CISOs of the risks posed by mobile threats to their enterprise, and the importance of securing mobile devices in the post-perimeter world.

Lookout data shows mobile security needs to be a priority

Lookout and Verizon analyzed aggregated data to get a better understanding of the current threat landscape. This effort leveraged Lookout’s mobile dataset of over 170 million devices and over 70 million analyzed apps, the world’s largest.

"Lookout mobile dataset enabled them to provide key insights into the spectrum of mobile risk for the Verizon MSI. Our work goes beyond the MSI report, as together we also address the growing threat to the enterprise and SMB markets from mobile phishing and app threats."

Matthew Montgomery, Executive Director, Verizon Business Group.

Lookout data shows that attackers are adapting to a mobile-first, post-perimeter world. In the last 12 months alone, over 50% of sophisticated actors, identified by Lookout, were found to be targeting mobile devices as well as desktops. Moreover, attackers often target mobile devices through phishing. Lookout data reveals that enterprises users are three times more likely to fall for a phishing link when on a small screen (iOS or Android device) than when using a desktop OS, like Windows or macOS.

This shouldn’t be surprising, as today’s modern workforce means that employees work from anywhere in the world and their devices access corporate data from cloud services outside of traditional security protections. Your organization's critical data is constantly being accessed by mobile devices, and once it leaves the network, you have limited visibility into where it goes, and little or no ability to apply security policies to protect it. Securing data in the post-perimeter world requires organizations to take all endpoint security seriously, and a good first step is learning more about the risks of mobile threats to your enterprise in the Verizon MSI report.
