Lookout Finds ‘Next American Tech Hero’; Bay Area Pre-Teen Crowned Winner of Nationwide Contest

Lookout announced the conclusion of their hunt for the Next American “Tech Hero,” a tech savvy individual who people turn to for help and advice on mobile technology.

San Francisco, CA - January 15, 2014 – Lookout, the leader in mobile security, today announced the conclusion of their hunt for the Next American “Tech Hero,” a tech savvy individual who people turn to for help and advice on mobile technology. After the month-long search and 3,000 nominations later, the Lookout community awarded the grand prize to 12-year-old tech prodigy Aydan Beavers, a San Francisco Bay Area native who builds his own computers as a past time.

In addition to the Tech Hero title, Beavers and his nominator will split the grand prize of $2,000 to help them expand their knowledge of the latest and greatest mobile devices and emerging technologies.

The contest falls on the heels of a recent Lookout study conducted by Harris Interactive, which found that 1 in 3 adults depend on such “Tech Heroes” to make mobile purchasing decisions and provide advice on mobile technology, while over half (56%) agree they would love to have someone they could count on for help or advice of this nature.

In early December, Lookout called upon the American public to nominate their personal “Tech Heroes,” by sharing stories of how this tech savvy friend or family member has helped them better use and understand technology. Lookout received thousands of nominations from around the country, one of which was from DanVy Vu, Aydan’s mother.

“When I first heard the phrase ‘Tech Hero’ Aydan immediately came to mind. Sure, he built his own computer from scratch and teaches himself to code, but what makes him a true Tech Hero is his passion for technology, his patience and enthusiasm to help others who might be “challenged” by technology. And we have many in our household. On a monthly basis he’s helping one grandma or another recover their password. He always jumps on setting up a new gadget or device for me. One time he helped his grandma troubleshoot her laptop that wouldn’t turn on. It turned out she broke it using it as an ironing board . It’s great to have our own little Tech Hero around.”

“I’m really excited that I was chosen to be the Next American ‘Tech Hero,’” Beavers said. “I love technology and enjoy teaching people how to use it. Every time I help someone better understand a new piece of tech, it’s an awesome experience to watch them get as excited about it as I am.”
