Privacy, SSE Adoption: Takeaways From 2022 Gartner SRM in London

After a two-year hiatus, the Gartner Security and Risk Management, London is back! I had the privilege of attending a number of sessions, spending time talking with analysts and digesting some of the latest cybersecurity trends and strategies, including the Top Cybersecurity Predictions for 2022-2023 from Gartner. Two themes that stood out to me were security service edge (SSE) and extended detection and response (XDR)

Below are some of my key takeaways from this year’s conference.

Privacy to become a greater driver for security

At the top of the predictions for 2022-2023 shared by Gartner was that privacy legislations around the world will become an ever greater driver for security programs. It’s expected that 70% of the world’s GDP will be covered by these requirements by 2023.

To combat this, Gartner highlights automations as a way for large organizations to deal with multiple legislative jurisdictions on privacy. This aligns well with how Lookout has built our unified platform. By taking into account rich telemetry from endpoints, users, apps, and data, our customers are able to enforce precise and dynamic data protection policies.

SSE adoption is accelerating

Another prediction that stood out to me is that by 2025, 80% of enterprises will adopt a strategy to unify web, cloud services and private applications from a single SSE platform. The reason for this is that a unified approach combats the increasingly complex security landscape by simplifying security operations with unified visibility and policy enforcement capabilities.

This again aligns well with Lookout. There are two fundamental objectives for any security team — to enable and protect organizational resilience and to stop data breaches. By understanding the user, the device they’re using, and the app and data they seek to access, you’re able to both define and implement policy controls as well as quickly detect and respond to threats.

Protect hybrid work with SSE and endpoint security

Not to toot our own horn, but Lookout chief strategy officer Aaron Cockerill had his own presentation at the event, which was widely attended. Aaron spoke about how organizations can protect their hybrid workforce by leveraging both SSE and endpoint security. With an endpoint-to-cloud approach, IT and security teams can enforce access controls with precision that takes into account the fluctuating risk levels of endpoints.

For those of you who came by our booth to say hi, thank you for coming! If you weren’t able to make it, I hope my takeaways above are helpful.

Lookout will be back at the event’s North-American sibling in June 2023. We’ll also be at the London summit again in September 2023.

In the meantime, reach out to us! We’re happy to chat more about how a converged platform can secure your organization.

I also recommend you take advantage of our data risk score quiz. In just 15 minutes, we’ll give you a risk rating to help you assess your organization’s security posture.
